Last researched October 21, 2026

Who pays for ABA in Illinois, and what a practice has to do to bill them. Coverage details here come from statutes and agency pages we read, not from payer marketing.

Autism insurance mandate

Medium confidence: reputable secondary source
State mandate for autism coverage

Yes, the research found a state autism coverage law.

Statute

215 ILCS 5/356z.14 (Autism spectrum disorders)

Age limits

Individuals under 21 years of age.

Annual cap

Statutory base maximum benefit of $36,000 per year, adjusted annually for inflation by the Director of Insurance (Medical Care CPI component); no limits on number of visits. Payments for non-ASD conditions do not count toward the maximum. The current inflation-adjusted dollar amount was not verified, so $36,000 should not be read as a confirmed 2026 maximum. Subsection (d) also prohibits dollar limits less favorable than those applicable to physical illness generally.

Excludes self-funded employer plans

We could not verify this yet - check with your state insurance department.

Notes

As of 2026-10-21, the checker confirmed against the current official ILCS text that Section 356z.14 applies to group or individual accident and health policies and managed care plans amended, delivered, issued or renewed after December 12, 2008. 'Treatment' includes habilitative/rehabilitative care including applied behavior analysis. Subsection (e-5) bars denial solely because of the location where clinically appropriate services are provided. HB5225 was signed into law as Public Act 104-0561 on July 10, 2026, and its amendment is effective January 1, 2028; the pre-amendment version of the section applies as of the audit date. Earlier public acts cited in the section history (P.A. 103-154, 104-28 eff. 1-1-26, 104-417 eff. 8-15-25) and their effective dates match the current ILCS text. Whether self-funded plans are excluded was not verified.
