Getting a new technician started in Massachusetts
We have no state-specific timing note for Massachusetts yet. The national timeline still applies: see the RBT fast track.
What we are still checking
- MassHealth ABA provider qualifications, technician/RBT requirements and supervision (mass.gov pages returned access errors)
- Current MassHealth managed care entities and ABA administrators (only a 2016 handout was read: eligibility under 21 for Standard/CommonHealth, under 19 for Family Assistance)
- Whether M.G.L. c. 112 section 164 or 262 CMR exempts or addresses unlicensed behavior technicians (section 164 exemptions read did not list them)
- Self-funded plan treatment under c. 175 section 47AA
- MA ABA licensing fees and processing times
- Medicaid telehealth and telesupervision for ABA
- Background check (CORI) and agency licensing requirements for ABA providers
- A separate statewide ABA facility or agency license requirement was not established. Individual LABA licensure, payer credentialing and organizational accreditation are distinct requirements.
- Independent BT enrollment or direct billing authority was not established. The verified non-RBT pathways concern supervised service delivery within contracted ABA services.
- Current technician credentialing and billing requirements were not verified for every MassHealth MCE or commercial product. HNE's January 27, 2026 RBT requirement appears in its policy archive; confirm the policy applicable to the service date.
- ABA-specific telesupervision conditions, including whether particular remote arrangements satisfy direct-supervision requirements and which codes are payable, remain unverified across plans. Fallon's modifier FR provision alone does not resolve these questions.
- The EOHHS Summer 2026 accreditation presentation is publicly linked by WellSense but its final slide says 'Confidential – for policy development purposes only'; confirm final contractual implementation of its corrective-action and provisional-participation pathways.
- The major_payers array was preserved outside this pass's edit scope and remains historical. More recent plan contacts appear in the EOHHS presentation cited under practice_requirements; a complete current payer roster and every enrollment route were not verified.
- The telehealth_aba section was preserved outside this pass's edit scope. Its statement that Medicaid ABA telehealth rules were not found is superseded by the Carelon/MBHP evidence recorded under practice_requirements.other.
- Self-funded plan treatment under c. 175 section 47AA remains unverified in this pass.
- MA ABA licensing fees and processing times remain unverified.
- Several Mass.gov pages and PDFs returned 403 errors; the updated findings rely on accessible legislative publications, payer documents and the identified Cornell LII regulatory mirror.
