BT vs RBT: what a behavior technician needs in Mississippi

Last researched October 21, 2026

Behavior technicians are not all regulated the same way. This page separates what the BACB requires, what Mississippi and its Medicaid program say, and what remains unverified.

Detail

As of 2026-10-21, under Board rule 1.3 a Behavior Technician is an individual currently certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board who works under the supervision and direction of a licensed behavior analyst or licensed assistant behavior analyst. Rule 9.3 sets the registration requirements for Board-regulated BTs, and the supervising licensee submits the registration. The Board's registration form references a seven-day filing deadline after the supervisor assumes supervision. The cited sources do not expressly say whether a BT may provide services while Mississippi registration is pending, or that a prohibition begins before that deadline, so no explicit grace-period determination can be made. A lack of BACB RBT certification should be distinguished from pending Mississippi registration. Statutory exemptions and the Rule 8.1 paraprofessional exception are preserved and may apply. The cited sources do not establish independent billing eligibility for a BT.

State-specific requirements
  • Age 18+, high school diploma or equivalent, good moral character (Rule 9.3)
  • Current BACB RBT certification and RBT supervisee certification number (Rule 9.3; Board form)
  • Registration with the Mississippi Autism Board submitted by the supervising licensee, $25 fee per BT, with notarized signatures (Rule 9.3)
  • Supervisor attests the RBT completed a criminal background registry check as required by the BACB (Board form)
  • Supervisor notifies Board within 7 days of ending supervision (Rule 9.4)

What Medicaid says about technicians

Medium confidence: reputable secondary source
Who may deliver services

CMS approved ASD services for EPSDT-eligible beneficiaries when medically necessary, prior authorized and furnished by qualified providers within their scope of practice, effective January 1, 2017 (approval May 23, 2017). The fetched state plan, Attachment 3.1-A, Exhibit 4b, page 6, lists licensed physicians, psychologists, mental health nurse practitioners, LCSWs, LPCs and BCBAs. It also permits actively BACB-certified, Mississippi-licensed BCaBAs supervised by a Mississippi-licensed BCBA, and actively BACB-certified RBTs under direct supervision and direction of a BCBA or BCaBA. Licensed practitioners assume professional responsibility and bill for technician services; the provision does not authorize independent RBT billing. MESA accepts provider enrollment applications; its instructions require Medicaid FFS enrollment and CCO contracting for MississippiCAN participation. DOM's February 2026 enrollment report names Molina Healthcare, Magnolia Health and TrueCare.

RBT required for technicians

Yes.

RBT condition detail

The state plan expressly requires current, active BACB RBT certification for the technician pathway; an uncertified BT does not meet that requirement. Mississippi Autism Board Rule 9.3 additionally requires current RBT qualifications and Board registration submitted by the supervising licensee. Technicians work under the analyst's license rather than holding a separate professional license. The Board registration form specifies submission within seven days of assuming supervision. Medicaid payment while Board registration is pending was not established.

National baseline

Per BACB: the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is 'a paraprofessional certified in behavior analysis' who assists in delivering behavior-analytic services under the direction and close supervision of an RBT Supervisor and/or RBT Requirements Coordinator, who are responsible for all work the RBT performs.

Getting the RBT credential takes a 40-hour training, a competency assessment, an application and an exam. See the RBT pathway and the fast-track timeline.

Mississippi note from our research: In Mississippi a new BT cannot start as an unregistered technician under the Board rules: the BT must already hold the BACB RBT credential and be registered by the supervising LBA/LABA (7-day registration, $25, notarized form). This makes finishing the BACB RBT process first the critical path.
